Troubleshooting Panopto Grades in Moodle's Gradebook

If a Panopto Activity in Moodle is set to accept grades from Panopto, those grades will be automatically populated in the Moodle gradebook. However, there are some factors that can prevent Panopto from reporting grades to Moodle.

This article provides guidance on troubleshooting Panopto grades in the gradebook.

Requirements for Grade Reporting from Panopto to Moodle

In order for a Panopto video to report back to the Moodle gradebook, it must be shared to the Moodle course using the Panopto Activity.

See the "Adding Panopto Videos in Moodle" article for more information about using the activity and configuring its settings.

Reset Panopto Activity Sync

If a Panopto activity has already been added in Moodle and isn't passing back grades from a percentage viewed or quiz grades, reset the grade sync by selecting the content again.

  1. Navigate to the Panopto activity.
  2. In the activity menu at the top of the page, select the Settings tab.
  3. In the Panopto settings page, click the Select Content button.
  4. In the pop-up menu that appears, select the appropriate grading method.
  5. Re-add the video using the Panopto menu.
  6. In the bottom right corner of the pop-up window, click the Insert button.

Do not change the activity name. It will be automatically set by the Panopto activity, and the activity requires the same name as the video.

Following this, enable the grade sync by following the directions in the "Moodle Activity Grade Settings" section of this article.

Moodle Activity Grade Settings

If the Panopto activity in the Moodle course is not configured to allow Panopto to add grades to the gradebook, then an error message can appear for students stating: "This video must be launched from your course to ensure your grade is reported. If you continue watching, your grade will not be reported."

To fix this, set the Panopto activity to allow adding grades in the gradebook:

  1. Click the Panopto activity.
  2. In the activity menu at the top of the page, select the Settings tab.
  3. Find and expand the Grade section.
  4. Enable Allow Panopto to add grades in the gradebook.
  5. Click the Save and return to course button.

Ensure that students access the video by clicking the Panopto activity link in Moodle, not by using any other link. This can be resolved by emailing them the link to the activity in Moodle, or by making sure there are no other links to the Panopto video available to the students.

Panopto Sharing Settings

Ensure that the access permissions for the folder containing the video are set as needed in Panopto. The access permission setting needed is Your organization (unlisted).

See the "Setting Access Permissions on Panopto Videos and Folders" section of the "Sharing Panopto Videos and Folders" article for instructions on adjusting those permissions.

After Changing Any of the Above

If any students have already received a grade in Panopto before any of the above adjustments were made, they will need to re-open the activity for the grade to be reported to the Moodle gradebook.
