Changing the Appearance of the Tiles Format in Moodle


When using the Tiles course format, Tile can be customized to be more aesthetically pleasing or to better communicate their purpose or intent by changing the icon or uploading a customized image from the user's device. 

This article provides instructions on changing the colors and images used for sections in the Tiles format.

Setting Up Tiles Format

When a course is changed to Tiles from another format, the icon and color scheme can be changed.

  1. In the course menu from the main course page, click on the Settings tab.
  2. Find and expand the Course format section.
  3. Set the Format field to the Tiles option.
  4. Set the Tile icon field to an available icon using the Pick a new icon button.
  5. Use the Color for tiles setting to change the tile color.

Changing the icon and color here applies to all tiles at once. Continue editing additional options in the Course format section as desired.

Customizing Tiles

When Tiles format is used in a course, individual Tile icons or images can be changed to suit the designer's needs. This is done individually on each Tile. 

  1. In the top right corner of the Moodle window, enable Edit mode using the toggle.  The course will display as a list of sections in the main course page.
  2. On the right of the section heading, click the Edit icon (which looks like three vertical dots).
  3. In the drop-down menu that appears, select the Set photo/icon option.
  4. In the Pick a new icon or background photo menu for that specific tile, select the Tile icons, Numbers, Photo library, or Upload new photo tab. 

The Tile icons, Numbers, and Photo library tabs all provide options for selecting an image. To use the Upload new photo tab:

  1. Review the Guidance section to ensure that the chosen image's dimensions are compatible.
  2. Upload a new image from the device using drag and drop or the file picker.
  3. Click Save changes to apply the new look to the tile. 

Disable Edit mode using the toggle to display the new Tile's look.

If the icon or image is not displaying correctly, repeat the steps above to choose an alternate image.
